Expressive Collage Applying Your Own Sense Of Creativity When Customizing A Leather Vest
Private Group active 9 months, 2 weeks agoIf you’re among the many people who love to ride their motorcycles on the open road, you understand mystique. It may be the feeling of freedom, the wind in your hair or the sun on your skin, but people who love to ride love the experience. But if you’re going to ride, you have to do it in the right gear. Some say a customized motorcycle vest is essential for getting in the spirit of things.
The great thing is that you can even make your own leather vest. It’s a great way to be creative and you can make it exactly the way you want it. The materials are easy to find at any fabric store or hobby shop.
Start simply by taking an old T-shirt and using that as your pattern. Rip or cut off the collar and sleeves. That way you have a template for the leather you’ll use for your vest. After you cut the leather, sew it together.
Be sure to try it on before continuing. You want the fit to be right before you add snaps or zippers. You may want to consider making the vest reversible. It will give you more fashion options but will be harder sew.
Many times people who ride motorcycles like to add badges or patches to their vests. These usually refer to a group they are with or places they’ve been. The patches should be made of something sturdy so they hold up well.
It’s usually a good idea to sew on the patches, rather than ironing them on. A patch that is sewn on will usually stay on while riding at high speeds.
Once you have created patterns for the front and back of your vest, go ahead and place them on the leather material. Cut them out and sew them together. Make adjustments to the fit as you go. You want it to look fitted but not too tight. Don’t add the zipper or other embellishments until you get the fit right.
Many of the newer sewing machines come with elaborate embroidery programs. These allow you to sew pre-programmed designs onto fabric. Some machines even allow you to upload designs. If you have an older machine you can still do fun designs. Download or draw a design you like on tracing paper. Pin it to the vest and sew over the design. Simply tear away the paper when you’re done. Now you’ve a fun design you created yourself.
